In 2010, agreement was reached on the maritime boundary between Norway and Russia in the entire disputed area. The agreement between Norway and Russia on maritime demarcation and cooperation in the Barents Sea and the Arctic Ocean was signed by the two countries' foreign ministers in Murmansk 15 September 2010.

In addition to determining the actual demarcation line, the agreement stipulates that the good fisheries cooperation will continue as before, and that the parties shall cooperate in connection with the exploitation of any cross-boundary petroleum deposits. When the demarcation agreement came into force on 7 July 2011, the so-called grey area agreement was discontinued, which concerned the practical arrangements for fishing in certain controversial areas of the Barents Sea.
